Independent Resorts

KSL Resorts firmly believes in the inherent value and timeless appeal of classic, independent resorts. We are unique among hotel companies in pursuing for acquisition and management those iconic hotels that time has often left behind. Since 1992, KSL has brought back to life hotels whose names have long and rich histories: The Hotel del Coronado (San Diego, CA), La Costa Resort and Spa (Carlsbad, CA), La Quinta Resort & Club (Palm Springs, CA), Rancho Las Palmas (Rancho Mirage, CA), Montelucia Resort & Spa  (Scottsdale, AZ), and The Homestead (Hot Springs, VA).

The impetus for KSL’s belief and aptitude for classic resorts lies in the company’s appreciation for their one-of-a-kind, independent nature. One of the few hotel companies that believes in the inherit strength of the local brand, KSL also appreciates that these properties usually come with great assets that extend beyond the hotel itself – campus-like settings, championship golf courses and other recreational amenities, and time-honored spas, among them.

So while other hotel companies are daunted by the investment and time it takes to renovate and restore classic hotels and often undercapitalize that effort, KSL has proven time and time again that there are clear benefits to spending wisely on these historic assets.

We pay attention to the local, often historic character of the interiors, but upgrade and update both public spaces and guest rooms. Importantly, we make them work for the modern traveler by installing must-have conveniences and technology including high-speed internet, wireless, and flat screen TVs.

We focus capital and attention on position defining amenities such as spas. Build and renovate new spas as appropriate.

We understand that guests want food and beverage outlets that are relevant to their needs and tastes – ones that are well-designed and well-conceived from a culinary standpoint. We believe in partnering with experienced restaurant designers to create sophisticated and exciting environments to compliment the historic nature of the resorts.

We invest in facilities that make family vacations outrageously successful with high brow designs of kids and teen clubs along with outstanding family pool and play areas.

The KSL Resorts approach to revitalizing classic hotels can best be illustrated by its legion of loyal followers and their enthusiastic reception of the changes made to these iconic resorts. For example, La Costa Resort and Spa, credited in 1965 with being America’s first destination spa resort, has recaptured its earlier fame with a brand new spa and $140 million restoration, while its golf and tennis facilities once again attracted world-class events such as the World Golf Championships, Accenture Match Play Championship and the WTA Acura Classic Tennis Tournament. Rancho Las Palmas made headlines with its stunning new outdoor pool playground called Splashtopia, complete with lazy river and multiple slides. The Homestead has earned back its stature as one of America’s most valued historic properties with a sweeping restoration of rooms and historic restaurants including their Main Dining Room and always popular “Casino”.

KSL Resorts will continue to seek out management of classic, independent resorts, knowing that American life is more transient than ever and the ability to reconnect with tradition, never more relevant.
